Point of departure
The oral transmission of myths, so crucial in traditions, is in decline. This intangible heritage, once fervently transmitted within communities, is threatened by rapid technological advances and globalization. People are talking less to each other, our storytellers are disappearing and the elders are leaving one after the other. “Our libraries are burning” as the wiseman says, raising crucial questions about the transmission of our culture in a modern world obsessed with immediacy and overconsumption of visual information.
Will the griot 3.0 create images or polymorphic visual experiences? It seems essential to us through this exhibition to raise the question of the role of visual imagery in the transmission of our imaginations but also in the construction of our realities of the future. The rapid evolution of modes of communication, technologies and global perspectives also creates an opportunity to revitalize the vision of our myths and traditions.
Preserving myths and adapting them to our times would therefore require creative reinvention and judicious use of these technologies. It is by bringing these stories to life through contemporary visual representations that we can restore their importance and relevance to our societies, while honouring and preserving our cultural and spiritual heritage
Theme: Residency & Exhibition
We invite you not only to explore the myths of Martinique, but also to travel to the crossroads of our cultures where the mythological diversity reflects the plurality of peoples, languages and cultures of the Caribbean. The aim will be to propose a contemporary reinterpretation of ancestral legends, initiating a fertile dialogue between mythological past and fantastical future-s. To explore the boundaries of rituals and fantasies that shape our cultures by manipulating the image in all its forms: photographic, animated, collage, manipulated and more.
How does the dialogue between the past and the present resonate within the plurality of origin of our Caribbean traditions? What is the importance of myth and what do we know about our mythologies? What role do our elders play in our contemporary societies? Can the reinterpretation of divine entities, forgotten heroes, stories and symbols contribute to the enrichment of the cultural diversity that characterizes the Caribbean?
All these questions open up avenues for developing a more global reflection on the future of our diverse Caribbean societies.
